Dr. Brem Talks About High Recurrence Rate for Glioblastoma

Steven Brem, MD, professor of Neurosurgery and director of Neurosurgical Oncology, is quoted in a Philly.com story detailing the outlook for patients who, like former Phillies catcher Darren Daulton, are diagnosed with the brain cancer glioblastoma. The disease is an aggressive form of brain cancer that "comes back nearly 100 percent of the time," Brem said. But, he said, it's difficult to predict individual outcomes. Tumors can look similar to a pathologist, but their size, volume and location in the brain, as well as other biological and immunological factors, all influence how quickly the cancer returns.
