Penn Neurosurgeons Advocate for More Endovascular Training in Residency Programs
In a recent American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS)
Resident’s Forum article, Penn neurosurgeons assess the current role of endovascular surgical neuroradiology (ESN) training in American neurosurgery training programs and make the case for increased and earlier exposure to ESN as an integral part of neurosurgical training.
Drs. M. Sean Grady, Michelle Smith and Neil Malhotra report that a recent survey of neurosurgical program graduates indicated only ten percent of graduating neurosurgery residents were “well or very well trained” in endovascular techniques.
They argue that not only is early and integrated exposure to ESN necessary to guide the sub-specialty careers of residents, but the emergent field of ESN still has many unanswered questions and is ripe for hypothesis-driven research. In addition, a neurosurgeon dually-trained in both open and endovascular techniques can offer unique insight into the best course of treatment for patients.
