Working Memory Training Research Study: Investigating how brain training improves foreign language learning
About the study:The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language is conducting several studies examining the effects of working memory training on learning and using foreign languages! You can receive $10 per hour of participation in this study, with participation time varying between 10 and 20 hours, depending on which study you are eligible to participate in.
What is working memory?Working memory is what you use to store and process information in real time. You use working memory whenever you have to:
· Focus
· Filter out distraction
· Switch between tasks
· Understand text or speech
· Learn a new language
Who can participate in this study?·Participants should:
-Be native English speakers between the ages of 18-40.
·Possess normal, or corrected to normal, hearing and vision.
·Have unimpaired use of their dominant writing hand.
·Does not possess a personal history of neurological, neuropsychiatric, psychiatric disorders, or learning disabilities.
·Does not have a recent history of excessive alcohol consumption, drug use, or substance abuse.
What functions or tasks will participants be asked to complete?The length of participation ranges from 10 hours to 20 hours, spaced over several weeks and multiple 1 and 2-hour sessions. During these sessions you will be asked to complete tasks of memory, reading, thinking, and problem solving.
