Part-Time Teaching Assistant Position (Paid) - PSYC 100FC


The Department of Psychology has a part-time, paid position to support one of its Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 100-FC01) courses in the fall 2014 semester.

The position is a Contingent 1 contract for up to 20 hours per week for the fall 2014 term. Compensation is estimated to be $10.25 per hour and will not exceed a total of $3,075 USD (300 hours).  The position starts September 2nd and ends December 24th.

Responsibilities include:
  • Leading pre-structured activities during discussion sections meetings
  • Online grading of course writing assignments
  • Managing some aspects of the course website and administration (grades, emails, etc.)
  • Meeting with individual students to discuss course, content and writing feedback.
Minimum requirements to be considered:
  • Have officially graduated with a bachelor's degree in Psychology from UMD.
  • Have earned an "A" in PSYC 100 (or equivalent).
  • Are available Monday and Wednesday evenings (5:45pm - 9:00pm) and for at least five regular office hours per week throughout the entire contract period.
  • Can offer evidence of high-level communication skills, particularly in writing, proofreading, and speaking.
  • Can offer evidence of an organized, reliable work ethic and the ability to work independently as well as with teams of peers.
  • Can offer evidence of technical proficiency with common software (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Canvas).
  • Can be trusted with sensitive and confidential information
  • Are excited about the idea of leading groups of students through activities, reviews, discussions.
  • Have completed training on the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (ter.ps/ferpa)
Strongest consideration given to candidates who:
  • Took PSYC 100 with Dr. Curtis or Dr. Roberts.
  • Have prior teaching assistantship experience.
  • Have experience mentoring, advising or assisting other students.
  • Are highly proficient with Excel, SPSS.
  • Have experience with clicker administration (e.g., syncing participant lists, creating questions, uploading grades to ELMS).
