The National Defense University offices of Legislative Affairs and Public Affairs are seeking an intern for the summer 2012 semester.
Position Description: The intern will work directly for Dr. Stephen Bowles, PhD, ABPP, Associate Professor (
[email protected]) at the Eisenhower School and will be involved in research for couples’ resilience, leadership, deployment psychology, and mind-body research. This position will afford candidates the opportunity to obtain real world work experience and to interact with senior officials from the Department of Defense and other governmental agencies.
This is an unpaid position of 16 hours per week during the school year, and 40 during the summer. The internship will begin by January 2013, with an ending date to be negotiated. The ideal candidate has the following competencies and duties:
Qualifications: · Background in psychology/social sciences/media journalism preferred
· Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with senior staff
· Desire and interest in working with people and indirect research
· Ability to synthesize and compile research into a concise, readable format
· Knowledge and skill with database management tools for research as well as basic organizational skills
· Willingness to learn how to understand critical psychological research and format for presentations
· Computer skills with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and working with websites
· Comfortable working in an environment composed of senior leaders
· Administrative and typing skills to draft official correspondence, memos, e-mails, and background papers
· Ability to act with diplomacy and tactfulness
Responsibilities: · Writing literature reviews, articles, PowerPoint presentations, posters, manuscripts, protocols
· Preparing journal publication submissions
· Coordinating articles with co-authors
· Organizing paper work and files
· Database entry/management/data analysis
· Responsible for internet operations, recruiting and scheduling participants, providing consent forms, administering tests, operating interview audio recording equipment
· Will participate in working groups and observe/record interviews
· Interactions with DoD and other agencies as well as other duties will be determined
