Candace's Comeback: Brain Injury Survivor Story

On July 19, 2005, Candace Gantt suffered a serious brain injury after being struck by a car while riding her bicycle. Following an extensive hospitalization and surgeries at Penn Medicine, she was back on her bike just six months after the accident.

This October, Candace will participate in her first-ever full Ironman Triathlon in Wilmington, North Carolina to raise funds for brain injury research in Penn’s Center for Brain Injury and Repair (CBIR). This event, called Beach 2 Battleship, includes a 2.4 mile open water swim, 112 mile bike ride, and marathon run (26.2 miles) for a total of 140.6 miles of competition. An Ironman Triathlon is a grueling task that requires physical endurance and mental strength. Meet Candace and read about her story.
