Canadian filmmaker Sarah Polley has won the New York Film Critics Circle's best first film award for her directorial debut
Away From Her, an adaptation of Alice Munro's short story
The Bear Came Over the Mountain. Academy award-winning actress Julie Christie took the best actress award for her performance in Polley's film as a woman suffering from the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
